DraftKings Extends Its Lead Online
DraftKings; sole online partner of the Passamaquoddy Tribe; took roughly 80% of all online handle in Maine through August. Its $306.7M YTD figure dwarfs the $77.9M reported by the three-tribe Caesars coalition.
The gap narrows on the revenue line but stays wide. DraftKings posted an 11.9% hold (AGR ÷ handle), generating $36.5M in adjusted gross receipts, while Caesars online operations held 7.3% for $5.6M. Caesars has closed part of that spread since spring; its cumulative hold has risen from 6.7% through April to 7.3% through August, though DraftKings still converts far more of every dollar wagered.
Summer Handle Holds Up
Maine's off-season handle proved sturdier than a typical summer lull. Statewide monthly totals ran $41.0M in May, $44.8M in June, $51.8M in July, and $49.3M in August; comfortably above the $25–35M range quieter summers have produced elsewhere. Baseball volume and steady futures and player-prop betting kept turnover up in the stretch between the NBA and NFL seasons.
Retail Stays a Rounding Error
Oddfellahs in Portland remains Maine's flagship retail sportsbook, posting $4.43M in YTD handle through Caesars-affiliated First Tracks Investments. Oxford Sportsbook, the state's second retail venue, added $211.8K over the same period. Combined retail handle accounts for just 1.2% of Maine's total; consistent with national patterns showing online and mobile betting dominating wagering volume in every state with both channels available.
State Tax Take
Maine's 10% adjusted-gross tax rate, defined under LD 585, yielded $4.25M in state revenue over eight months. That money flows to the General Fund (65%), the Gambling Control Unit (10%), addiction prevention and treatment programs (10%), the Harness Racing Commission and Sire Stakes (5.5% each), and Agricultural Fairs (4%).
What to Watch Next
- NFL 2026 in the next report. September's NFL opener typically lifts monthly handle sharply; the September figures, due mid-October, will be the first real read on the 2026 football season.
- Caesars online recovery. Whether Caesars keeps narrowing the hold-rate gap with DraftKings will shape how lopsided the duopoly looks through the football season.
- LD 1164 (online casino). Governor Mills' January 2026 announcement that tribal-operated online casino legislation will move forward could reshape gaming economics in late 2026.
